It seems so long ago that I wrote the novel Eternal Shades of Christ in response to the horrendous 50 Shades phenomena. And now, so soon the second film is about to be released.
I wrote the book (I think now looking back) because I hated the idea that people were buying so wholeheartedly into the idea of hate and violence as love. I wrote it because I really felt that God wanted me too.
I worked a lot out for myself writing it – the few people who have bought it on Amazon tell me it made think about the nature of their faith. And I had two e mails from people who’d found it when they had nothing and went on to have everything as it encouraged them to look up the only real thing that matters – the awesome love of Jesus. (And those two people make it all worthwhile.)
And, through the terrific journey writing it took me on (all courtesy of Jesus) changed who I was. I changed jobs. I spend money on getting places where I could make a difference – yes through faith – but mainly through action. And I changed – inwardly, heartfeltly.
And the shadow of that film coming out again makes me take stock again. I want to repost something I wrote last year because – to everyone preparing to throw money at a film celebrating something which can never be love – it’s a starting point of explanation as to why that whole ethos – of humiliation, of domination, of hurt – has nothing for me.
And This Is Why …..
And when when they ask me: this is why –
Because He makes me tall when I am surrounded by those who seem taller
Because He gives me heart when my heart has stopped.
Because He does not allow me to be silent when silence is complicity by another name.
Because He does not let me filter the truth to be the truth I want.
Because He shows me a target far beyond the target that my own eyes find.
Because He redefines what is the end and where lies the horizon.
Because He floods nights with sunlight.
Because He shows me that a crown is made of rags and tears for others.
Because He takes the world that was before Him and rearranges every piece of it.
Because He reinvents.
Because He is the voice of who He knows I can be.
Because He changes everything.
Because He is Nazarene. Because He is King.
Because I am His believer, His follower, His doulos.
Because He is.
Messiah. Light. The one true way.
